When fall arrives on the Crystal Coast, the fishing shifts into something special. As water temperatures drop and north winds kick in, baitfish pour out of the local inlets by the millions, and what follows is one of the most visually spectacular fishing events on the East Coast.
This is the fall albie blitz, and Cape Lookout is regularly at the epicenter of it. False albacore, or albies, are hard-fighting, fast-running fish that hit flies and lures at the surface and immediately put a serious strain on your drag. There is a devoted following for albie fishing up and down the East Coast, and many of those anglers make the trip to Cape Lookout specifically because the action here can be extraordinary.
Captain Will runs these trips on a search-and-destroy mission: running the beaches, scanning for diving birds and surface busts, then getting into position to cast. When the fish are fired up, the results can be unforgettable. Fly fishing and light spinning gear are the ideal tools, and Captain Will can accommodate both.
Albies are not the only species that join the fall blitz. Sharks, Spanish and king mackerel, bluefish, and redfish, including occasional giant old drum, all participate in the action. If you want aggressive, hard-fighting fish in one of the most beautiful coastal environments in the country, this is your trip.
